LOVE STORY 1. THE EVENT

2010 had one of the longest, coldest and most beautiful winters in over a decade. Getting from one place to another quickly, while trying not to slip and break your hip, resulted in less eye contact and a tense neck. We found ourselves fighting against one too many of a selection of negative feelings. Besides the central heating and Saunas that we are lucky to have in Finland, we also have those close to us to share our time with and warm up with their love.

They say that sharing is caring. And besides the fact that it rhymes and sounds a little sexy and funny, it is 100% true. When was the last time you looked a stranger straight in the eyes and shared a smile? Are we somehow worried they will get the wrong idea and think that we are after something more then a simple smile in return? It is a very small risk, which we should all take. A little stretch of your facial muscles can result in turning someone’s day around and will surely come back to you, quicker than you think.

Love is ecstatic to have the opportunity of inviting the summer of 2010 together with you and your loved ones. The only dresscode we have this time is a big fat smile. If we are all lucky, we might get some people addicted to it and make this world an even more beautiful place to live in.

LOVE STORY 2. ERIC PRYDZ

Back when I was an active vinyl shopper, I came across a track titled ā€˜Slammin’, released on Credence records by a producer strangely named Eric Prydz. Filter house was a big thing for myself and many others, but this record was somehow different then the rest. With its huge pumping sound it had an amazing impact on the dance-floors I was playing for. I started researching who is behind this huge sound and unusual name, and eventually found out he came from Stockholm.Ā Back then no one even imagined that some day there would be a phenomenon called ā€˜The Swedish House Mafia’.

I got to meet Eric Prydz for the first time in 2004, while working on my second album as Dallas Superstars with JS16. Our Swedish label ā€˜Stockholm Records’ invited us for their Christmas party, where A very down to earth and calm dude told us the secrets of how to get that pumping sound we were looking for, by something called side chain compressing… The end result of our meeting with him can be widely heard on many of the tracks on our album and an endless number of dance tracks today. Shortly after our meeting,Ā Eric Prydz had his first commercial breakthrough when ā€˜Call on me’ came out, topping charts all over the world and selling over 4 million copies. There was simply no escaping the track and soon you could see his name all over hugely promoted remixes and big budget videos. He had officially broken through.

Eric producedĀ ā€˜Proper Education’ in 2006 to use as an exclusive DJ tool for his private use. Reactions to the track were so extensive that he went the distance to try and release the track on his Pryda label. Surprisingly, he becameĀ the first artist to ever get clearance for a Pink Floyd sample and had his second crossover hit… Rumors say that his third mega hitĀ ā€˜Pjanoo’was very close to being thrown to the bin, after his test try for it received very little crowd reaction. Two years after he gave it another go on a small-scaled gig in Sweden, where a clip of the crowd going absolutely nuts for the track ended up on Youtube. And as they say, the rest is history… It’s crazy to think of how things work some time. Timing, being at the right place and a bit of luck may drive you to the stars and far beyond.Ā You just need to keep on playing.

Besides the obvious fact that he is an extremely rare talent, I have a feeling that his phobia of flying has something to do with his super powers of being such a trendsetter. He is continuously releasing underground hits on his own labels, under his pseudo namesĀ Cirez D and Pryda and his music is closely followed and widely played by an incredibly wide range of DJ’s. For all these reasons I feel blessed to be one of the warm up DJ’s for Eric on his visit to Helsinki and look forward to being once again surprised and inspired by his sound.

-Heikki L - DJ, Producer and true House Music Lover since 1993

LOVE STORY 3. LOVING LIGHTS

We had had a tough year in London, we missed our friends and home.Ā We had decided to come back to Helsinki via Berlin and the legendary Love Parade.Ā We bought flights to Berlin and had train tickets from Berlin to Stockholm. It was all planned, booked and in order. Then, it all went pear shaped.

Passport – check? Well no, without our knowledge one of our party could not get a new passport. Flights – check? Erm; BA’s cabin crew went on strike two days before our flight. Travel companion – check? A friend from England was going to join us, but was flying on standby – with the strike there would be no standby seats. Cash – check? Nope, we got turned in Kentish Town.Ā We were truly stuck and broke.

Then through pure bloody mindedness and some amazing consular staff, the then Foreign Minister (now our President) was dragged out from a lunch appointment by a concerned civil servant at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to sign permission for a special emergency passport: Passport – check! The BA strike did not effect DeutcheBA – flight: Check! Friend on standby – managed to get a seat on the plane: Check! Finally, our boss at the legendary club Leasure Lounge decided to help us out – Cash: Check!

We flew from a totally desolate Heathrow, and landed at a manically busy Berlin Tegel. One of Berlin’s own; DJ Wimpy came and picked us up and took us straight out clubbing. This on Wednesday before the Parade. All weekend we danced: toĀ Sven in the park, Derrick at Tresor, Kiki at some east Berlin tranny club. You name it, we were there, loving every second of it!

All of this was amazing – and then came the day after the Parade:

Sunrise, sunshine and sunset all day outside by the Philharmonic’s concert park. The best trance and house DJ’s of that time, natural light so perfect that we still want to bring it indoors to every summer party.Ā Light makes you feel alive!Ā It’s impossible to imitate, but worth trying!

The absolute feeling of friendship once we met our dear friends after having been away all year gave the scene an aura of LOVE. Also, we will never forget the tone of blue as the Sun started to set and the sounds of EyeQ classics were played by Sasha.Ā It was pure LOVE.

LOVE STORY 4. HEINEKEN GIVES YOU VISIONS OF LOVE

With it’s work on bringing forward and supporting the amazing talents of Finnish artists and visionaries, Heineken is a natural partner for LOVE. Some use their power to create waste, while others use it to create beauty and share it freely…

A collaboration of illustrator Eero Johannes and Set designer artist Alisha Davidow bring you ‘Visions of LOVE’. Their work has been seen at the National Theater and Ballet of Finland, BBC, Helsingin Juhlaviikot, The Resolution- festival in London, Sounds like Suomi in China, Microsoft, Basso and many more to come… With the help of a third visionary, Photographer Maria Miklas, we are looking forward on capturing you as a part of this one time art installation at The Circus.

Visions of LOVE will be located at the stairs leading from the dance-floor to the upper floor. The photos will be found at the LOVE website after the event.

Love Story 1: The Background

Helsinki is a city full of passionate people. There are countless individuals that doctors might consider crazy, but to others they’re truly amazing. They come out at night, looking to give birth to another memorable experience. Nothing feels better than finding yourself surrounded by them on the dance floor. When there’s a break in a song, the lights go out, someone in the back whistles, right on time. Like magic, a warm wave lifts your hands towards the sky, and it feels as if your feet lift up off the ground. You knew it was going to happen, but it still comes as a surprise. Time and time again.

‘LOVE’ brings together for the first time three passionate groups of Helsinki’s nightlife. They’ve all been here a long time and still get excited about the opportunity to give more than ever. Past experiences are not forgotten — A masquerade on anĀ Island, aĀ Rock n Roll Rave, an imaginary visit toRenaissance times, 16 hours in theĀ Sun, the perfect day withĀ CafĆ© del Mar, or only aĀ One Minute Rave… It’s exactly those memories that drive these people toĀ build something new. In one of Finland’s most astounding venues, they’ll have a chance to create yet another perfect new moment. And it all sounds better with you.

Love. Brings us all together.

Love Story 2: The Artist

There are many reasons why Pete Tong has been calledĀ ‘The most powerful person in dance music’ by Muzik Magazine. Or even ‘The god of dance music’ by The Independent. It might be the fact that on a weekly basis, there are more thanĀ 30 million live listeners to his BBC1 radio shows ‘Essential Selection’ and ‘Essential Mix’. It might also be the fact thatĀ Daft Punk, Underworld, TiĆ«sto, Basement Jaxx, Justice, Eric Prydz and pretty much everybody in dance music hope to get him to be the first to introduce their music to the world. Maybe it’s the fact that since releasingĀ the first ever house music compilation in the UK — ‘The House Sound of Chicago Vol 1′ in 1986 — he has sold millions of compilations for brands such asĀ Pacha, Ministry of Sound, Cream, Mixmag andĀ his very own FFRR label where he’s signed such artists asĀ Orbital andĀ Goldie.

As the icon that he is, Tong was the inspiration behind the filmĀ “It’s All Gone Pete Tong”. As a producer he has assembled theĀ music for movie soundtracks such asĀ The Beach, Human Traffic andĀ 24 Hour Party People, and has produced his own material under various guises. He’s one of the biggest crowd pullers in clubland, including his legendery residencies atĀ Pacha Ibiza andĀ Ministry of Sound in London, and headlining slots all over the globe. It seems as if everything Pete touches turns into a long-lasting memory. Which explains why he’s one of the most sought after figures in a scene that’s built around music that turns into an experience.

The dance scene has changed a lot since Pete started, but one thing remains the same:Ā “People love music, make no mistake about that, whether and how they buy it right now is one thing, but people still want to party… it’s our job to come up with new parties, new nights, new venues, new themes to keep the scene fresh and exciting.” Pete still sees his vocation as he did when he started out, playing other people’s records to get an audience dancing.Ā “We need to constantly remember why people want to come to clubs – which is simply to have a great time and feel the music.” And here we are, ready to do just that.

LOVE is delighted to have Mr. Tong playĀ his debut gig in Finland on a night that will be remembered for a long time.

LOVE STORY #3Ā “This is where the magic happens”

“This is where the dance-floor will be. And lets leave the ceiling really high, like it is. We will fill it with a lot of lights and leave plenty of space for people to really feel free. The DJ needs to be able to have fun too, so lets not put him far away. Right there, in a big white DJ booth!”
Walking into an empty space and envisioning what will be sounds like a lot of fun… Like a little child you can plan a playground for your closest friends, and the ones you imagine meeting on the clubs soft sofas, sipping on a PiƱa Colada.

But having a strong vision is simply not enough. You need to believe in what you do, have the experience to do it and stand proudly behind
each risk you take. More than that, you need to be living for the night.Ā Niko HallamƤki andĀ Mehdi Younes brought Helsinki some of this millennium’s most successful concepts and nightclubs and have now taken their biggest step yet. Millions of euros and over 20 000 working hours have turned a boring 2000 square meter grocery store into an amazing party venue. Over 3000 liters of paint, 19 kilometers of cabling, 740 light-bulbs, 6 bars on two floors and 3 private karaoke booths with a dance-floor view makeĀ The Circus a nighttime heaven.

LOVE is the exclusive club event in Finland’s most impressive nightclub. The Circus is very excited to give you love, on a night where there will be no need to think about tomorrow. It will be simplyĀ here and now. What better way is there to live, than to celebrate with 1200 smiling people on a beautiful Helsinki summer night…

Love Story #4 – Art & Design

Agent Pekka, an illustration agency based in Helsinki and the first organization of its kind in Finland, was established in September 2007. Launched duringĀ Helsinki Design Week, Pekka works both in Finland and abroad, promoting Finnish talent worldwide.

Of Pekka’s 22 illustrators, 20 are Finns, and two are Finnish resident expatriates.Ā “We tend to point out the fact that Pekka is a Finnish illustration agency. There is an amazing amount of talented illustrators in Finland, so it’s been a real challenge to keep the number of illustrators we represent at around twenty. While we wanted to offer our clients a broad range of styles, we also wanted to keep the package manageable”, saysĀ Pablo Steffa, Managing Director of Pekka.

Miika Saksi is a college dropout. In his teens, Miika was named one of 20 most wanted web professionals in Finland. His style, however, was not bound to one media and nowadays he works as an illustrator, photographer and director. Miika’s work can be seen on album covers, magazines, advertisements and music videos. His clients includeĀ Adidas, Blue1, CTRL Clothing, Digital Bloom, EMI Finland andĀ Kalevala Koru.

Love Story #5 – COLOURS

In January over a year ago I found colours. I had just finished my three piece thesis of darkness in which I examined the scent, the noise and the taste of darkness. At that point I had a serious overdose of the black, the shadows and everything dark. The loneliness had exhausted me. I was an old rustling black and white TV showing nightmares on every channel.

I decided to go out wearing peacocks and flutter, order all the rainbow drinks with my credit cards and stay up until sunrise. My veins pumped oxytoxin as I had my first kiss of goodnight from a boy who grinned as he told me to follow the rabbits to greener grasses. I fell in love with table dancing, late night cocktail drama, frivolous thoughts and all the grinning people. I found new contrast in me as I waved goodbye to the cellars and attics and finally abandoned my broken heart. I replaced it with a spectrum that reflects hues of light even in the darkest places.

Love Story 1. The Event

Some say thatĀ first love is the strongest. And it really did feel like it on our opening night with Pete Tong.Ā 1300 people came together and created a vibe that will stay with us forever. The red dance-floor resembled a beating heart, that pumped life for a beautiful summer Sunday.

The second LOVE will be held on an historic night in Helsinki. On the 6th of August, 90 000 people will see the iconic Madonna performing in Finland, for the first time ever. The whole country will be listening, watching andstepping into the groove of the Queen of pop.

Warming up the crowd at the concert is another legend,Ā Paul Oakenfold. After being voted the worlds best DJ twice, holding residencies in some of Europe’s biggest clubs and headlining festivals, Paul headed to Hollywood in 2001. In 8 years he has worked on major soundtrack projects, production work for the worlds biggest artists and the best club residency in America.

With the full support of Madonna’s label ‘Warner Music’ and her tour organizer ‘Live Nation’, the people of LOVE are ecstatic of being apart of such an historical day. Mr Oakenfold will be headlining the party, supported by the legends of Finnish electronica. This will be the last LOVE event of 2009 and a classic closing to an amazing Summer.

LOVE. Brings us all together.

Love Story 2. The Artist

It’s hard to say who is my favorite DJ of all time, butĀ PAUL OAKENFOLD has
been the most pioneering and hard working DJ to me. His credits as a
producer, remixer and DJ are second to none but even more valuable is
his work in establishing the DJ as “an artist”. RemixingĀ U2’s ‘Even Better
Than The Real Thing’
, which ended up doing better in the charts than the
original, scoring music for theĀ Swordfish movie, producing the Happy
Mondays’ #1 album etc… It’s everyday business today but it wasn’t when
Oakenfold started in the 80s.

I first read about him from magazines like Mixmag and The Face during the
pre-internet time of the early 90s when we had to search UK magazines for
info about the music scene abroad. Many of his own productions and his
Perfecto label’s releases are cornerstones in the history of progressive
house and trance.Ā BT’s ‘Flaming June’, Man With No Name’s ‘Teleport’
or Grace’s ‘Not Over Yet’
are timeless pieces of music that many of
us truly love. HisĀ residency at Cream was inspirational in the way
that he developed his own sound and shaped songs into classics of that time.

I have very personal memories related with him – like waking up after my
18th birthday (painted red with lipstick by my friends!) in early 1995 and
hearing for the first time his legendary Dragonfly mix CD ‘Voyage Into
Trance’ and instantly loving the fresh and emerging Goa trance sound.
Or listening countless times to his Cream Live 2 CD while working in
the old school alternative clothing shop Dekadenz in the hot summer of
1996. Or my friend coming to Royl Cotton Club (where we were organizing
Unity in 1999) with a live MiniDisc recording from Creamfields festival where
Oakenfold opened his set with ‘Unity’ while the crowd was madly
chanting “Oakey… Oakey…” on top of the intro.

The most beloved memory must be the only time when I’ve met him.
It was July 1999 in Ibiza where he had a residency at Pacha. I had just
finished a remix of Jan Johnston’s ‘Flesh’ for Perfecto so his manager
asked me to visit the DJ booth. Hanging around there were Renaissance
owners Geoff and Joanna, DJ Tiesto, Hooj Choons label owner Red Jerry,
Pacha resident DJ Pippi and Oakenfold while BT was playing live. It was
all very casual but I was totally frozen by the amount of legendariness
in the booth! All of a sudden Oakenfold grabbed me to get some drinks
in the bar where I could barely say “Vodka Red Bull would be nice”.
I remember him as a down-to-earth, no ego, no attitude person, who
wanted to encourage new artists.

Oakenfold hasn’t been in the European spotlight recently as he has been
living in States for most of this decade. Alongside scoring movies, having
theĀ biggest DJ residency in the US and remixing Elvis and Justin
TimberlakeĀ he’s been on a mission to “break electronic music in
the US”.
Even if it sounds like a rather massive task, with his track
record of getting things done I believe he is playing important part in that.
And the story is definitelyĀ Not Over Yet.

-Tapio “Orkidea” Hakanen – DJ, promoter, producer and music lover since 1991

Love Story 3. The Artwork

I have been lucky to work with some extremely talented, stubborn, forward thinking and artistic illustrators and graphic designers in the last 10 years of our agency’s history.

Opening an attachment on an email fromĀ Ville Savimaa, has surprised me and put a smile on my face many times. Although he has never been into the so called ā€œsceneā€ I have been into my whole adult life, his perception of my world seems very clear. How can he possibly understand the whole history of a venue, brand, DJ or record label by hearing my short instructions and weirded out explanations and come up with something that has so much more then I even thought about? I think it is because he is smart, gentle and holds an open mind and heart…

Ville is easily one of my favorite illustrators in Finland. Not only because of his beautiful art, but because interacting with him is inspiring. Ville has, and still could work for Helsinki’s top advertising agencies, but prefers to take the little work that comes across him and focus on things he enjoys doing. He’d rather be eating noodles for the whole month and continue to draw out his emotions, than to design another newspaper add for some a product he would never even think of using… That’s what I call uncompromising passion for your work and what Ville would probably call ā€œthe only way he can liveā€.

I don’t really think I have learned much about the graphical design methods or technological possibilities out there, but each time I learn more about myself and receive a better understanding of the different types of people that fill our world. I can hardly wait for the next opportunity to be inspired by the amazing people that fill our city with beauty.

-Oded Peled -Ā DJ, promoter, event producer, reporter and scene lover since 1996

Love Story #4 – BASS! How low can you go?

I remember it like it was just last weekend. Me and my mates had been clubbing for 2 days and nights non-stop. The final leg of our clubbing crusade had come to full hault at the massive queue outside this abandoned warehouse just outside Vauxhall in southern London, people rushing and pushing from all sides trying to form a line while the bouncers the size of a mountain were screaming and shoving the punters to go back on the line, trying desperately to keep order, all the while chaos was just about to abrupt.

Had we been standing in the cold, autumn morning for an hour, two or three, none of us could really say. All of sudden, this young girl was standing in front of us. She said: “You guys look really cold. Come, IĀ“ve got something to show you.” We glimpsed at each other in disbelief but followed the epiphony back in the alley, just behind the club, where a small corridor was barely visible. The girl said: ” Wait here, IĀ“ll be right back.” She knocked on a huge steel door three times. The door swung open, and the sight of things blew us away. There was a man dressed up as a centaury, smiling, and beside him, a dwarf with a crazy ass grin on his face, smoking a huge cigar, dressed up as one the players from Clockwork Orange, with the cane and all. We passed the creatures – nervously smiling at each other, and followed the girl down a spiral staircase. I could hear the muffled echo of the bass growing louder…

What seemed like an eternity to climb down the stairs, was nothing to compare to the sight of things when we finally entered the club. There must have been thousands upon thousands of people. What once used to be an old railway pit-stop, had now been transformed to an mystical paradise of yestermorrow, a place where time stood still and all fantasies were about to come alive. Lasers swooping from all directions, a huge mirrorball in the middle of the room crystalizing every beam of light into the skins of sweaty clubbers. It was dark, it was underground, it was twisted, and we were just about to lose it. I could literally FEEL the bass, from the tip of my toes to the last hair standing on my neck. Final thing I remember was looking at my mates, hugging each other in unity, love and understanding, THIS was why we were, THIS was all we needed.. we let the music take control, and then it all went black..

8 hours later we“re sitting quietly on a train, smiling, all of our eyes half closed, on our way home. Of all the clubbing trips we took together, this was the one to write about, to tell our mates over a pint, of how one night can change your perception on LOVE, music and friendship. We were together, as one, our lives mystically entwined to the sounds of the underground. We had been on a journey that not only had enlightend our minds, but brought us to the roots of the ancient old ritual, the dance, the rhythms, the people coming together to celebrate LIFE.
